New Idea

I know that I probably shouldn't do this but I have a new idea and want to expand on another.

I think we can do a combination of two things for our class project:

1) Twice a year do a business casual clothing drive. It would be easy to do, low cost and many of us already have community contacts we can use.

2) Let's go to the homeless apartments once a month, pick a child who has a birthday that month and give them a birthday party. We can go to Chuckee Cheese or stay at their apartment or just bring donated gifts. The sky is the limit!

Both these activities will achieve what we all have been saying since the first meeting. Helping women and children. Giving them the needed boost they need.

What do you guys think?

  1. As a Welcoming Committee, we could do the clothing drive once or twice a year as one of the side-functions we will want to do. That will be a great way to involve new members of the community in an event that helps other women and will give them opportunities to work alongside established community members while they do so.

  2. I like the clothing drive idea. I think it is a reasonable time commitment to collect the donations and make them available. I heard that some closets are appointment only so we would not have to staff where we store the clothes. Many women would benefit from this.

I really hesitate about the birthday party idea. This might require a large financial obligation and how would we set limitations and fairly choose the child?

  3. I think we need to be focused and start small. It can always build to be more.

  4. the birthday party for kids can be expensive and can be very affordable depending on what the overall budget would be. i can give my kids a great birthday party for less than $40 if i want to. sometimes it's not how much you spend but who is there and what activities you do. you can get a list of kids birthdays and randomly draw the names. plus you can get donations from the community to help with the expense.
